Upload Password Protected Files
Learn how to upload and unlock password-protected files in Harvey so you can work securely with encrypted documents in Assistant.
Last updated: Dec 5, 2025
Overview
Important: unlocking password-protected files in Harvey is only available in Assistant at this time.
You can unlock password-protected, encrypted files directly in Harvey and work with them like any other file.
When Harvey detects that a file is password-protected, you’ll be prompted to enter the file password to unlock it. After you enter the password:
- The file is decrypted for use within Harvey
- You can open, analyze, reference, and use the file normally
If you upload multiple encrypted files at once, you may either:
- Enter individual passwords for each file, or
- Enter one password to unlock all encrypted files (if they share the same password)
This gives you flexibility while maintaining strict security and privacy controls.
Upload and Unlock Password-Protected Files
- Upload your file in Assistant.
- Enter the password for the file when prompted. If you enter an incorrect password, Harvey will prompt you to try again.
Once unlocked, the file behaves like any other uploaded file. Continue with your workflow (analysis, drafting, review, etc.).
Security, Data & Privacy
Your data remains protected throughout the process:
- Harvey does not store file passwords at any point. If you upload the same encrypted file again, you will be asked to enter the password again.
- Decrypted files behave like normal files — meaning any user with access to the file or vault can view it.
- Files remain governed by your workspace’s retention policies, permissions, and access controls.
- Harvey displays a pop-up warning to users when exporting or sharing threads containing password-protected files, confirming whether they want to proceed with sharing.
