Standardize and streamline contract review by creating a playbook directly from your contracts.

What is a Playbook?
A Playbook is a guide to help individuals or teams efficiently and consistently review, analyze, and negotiate contracts. It typically consists of guidelines on how to handle key clauses (e.g., indemnification, limitation of liability, confidentiality, intellectual property).
These can be used in Harvey for Word to help streamline contract review processes, saving time and ensuring consistency.
How Do Playbooks Work?
Playbook managers can create playbooks, then give users access to view the playbook and run it against a contract in Harvey for Word.
In practice, this can look like:
- Uploading a standard playbook directly into the Harvey app and edit the clauses
- Running a standard playbook against contracts in Harvey for Word to identify clauses that are acceptable, require review, or are unacceptable
- Directly implementing redlined changes suggested by Harvey to align a clause with the playbook rule
Tip: For more information on using Playbooks in Word, review our guide for how to run a Playbook.
How to Create a Playbook
Playbook managers and creators can create a playbook in three ways:
- Start from a template and build it manually
- Upload an existing playbook for Harvey to convert into your standard format
- Upload one or more contracts and let Harvey generate a playbook automatically using the “Create a Playbook” workflow
Upload an Existing Playbook
When you upload an existing playbook, Harvey converts it into our structured schema by extracting the underlying positions and guidance for reviewers from your document, which you can refine, edit, or remove to ensure the playbook reflects your team’s standards.
Note: Only Playbook managers and creators can perform these steps.
- In Harvey, go to Settings > Playbooks.
- Select Create.
- Select Create a playbook.
- Select Upload your playbook.
- Upload an acceptable playbook (refer to the formatting guidelines below).
- Harvey will extract your standard position, fallback positions, unacceptable deviations, or guidance notes from your existing playbook. We recommend that you review the conversions to ensure they accurately reflect your company's positions. You can edit or add these rules directly in the editor if needed.
- Select Save.
Note: Playbooks are private by default. To adjust access, refer to Playbook Builder Permissions.
Playbook Formatting Guidelines
Uploaded playbooks should follow the guidelines below:
- Rules should map to a specific clause type, be self-contained, and fit on a single bullet or table row.
- Each rule should clearly state a standard position, up to 4 fallback(s), and up to 4 unacceptable deviation(s).
- Keep playbooks under 125 rules with one contract type per playbook.
Tip: Refer to refer to Harvey for Word: Managing Playbooks to learn more best practices.
Upload Existing Contracts to Generate a Playbook
Harvey’s Create a Playbook Workflow agent allows you to create a playbook from existing contracts, supporting one of two routes:
- If you have a standard paper this can be uploaded for Harvey to generate your rules. Then, you can upload up to 10 additional contracts for Harvey to identify any less favorable positions as fallbacks.
- If you do not have a standard paper, upload up to 10 examples of recently negotiated contracts. Harvey will find and extract the most favorable positions to create your playbook.
Follow the steps below to begin the Create a Playbook Workflow agent:
- Select the Library tab from the main menu panel
- Locate and run the Create a Playbook Workflow agent
- Follow the agent steps as prompted
Note: Playbooks created through this workflow will live in Settings > Playbooks.
Create a Playbook from a Harvey Template
- Go to Settings.
- Select the Playbooks tab from the menu panel.
- Select Create.
- Select Create a playbook.

- Expand all rules, and edit or add as needed.
Playbook managers can give users either “view” or “edit” access to a specific playbook. For steps on granting access, follow Playbook Builder Permissions.
